Ambulance Paramedics jobs in Warrnambool

Ambulance Paramedics in Warrnambool do the same work as ambulance paramedics anywhere in Australia, but who employs them, and under which licence, is local. Warrnambool's largest employing industries are Health care and social assistance, Manufacturing and Retail trade, which shapes both where the work is and how steady it tends to be. Licensing is set by Victoria, not nationally — the requirements below are the ones that apply here.

Licensing

Licensing for ambulance paramedics in VIC

Paramedics are separately registered — not under the nursing board. Since 2018 paramedicine has been a registered profession under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme, regulated by the Paramedicine Board of Australia through Ahpra. Registration is national: one general registration is recognised in every state and territory, the title 'paramedic' is protected nationally, and you do not re-register when you move interstate. Registration standards, including professional indemnity insurance, CPD, recency of practice and criminal history, are set nationally by the Board. What varies by jurisdiction is the employer — each state and territory has its own ambulance service, two of them operated by St John under government contract — the industrial instrument, which is almost always a service enterprise agreement rather than the federal Ambulance and Patient Transport Industry Award 2020, the clinical practice guidelines and drug authorities issued by each service under that state's medicines and poisons legislation, the scope of practice tiers and titles each service uses, and the driver licence class, emergency driving accreditation and screening checks required locally.

Victoria
Ambulance Victoria is the statewide provider, with paramedics covered by the Ambulance Victoria enterprise agreement. Medicines are authorised under the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981 (Vic) and Ambulance Victoria clinical practice guidelines. Victoria uses Graduate Ambulance Paramedic, ALS, MICA (Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance) and Air Ambulance tiers — MICA is a distinctly Victorian designation — and Ambulance Victoria has a large volunteer and Community Emergency Response Team network in regional areas.

Local market

Who hires ambulance paramedics in Warrnambool

This is the heart of Australia's largest dairy region: Saputo Dairy Australia's Allansford plant, the former Warrnambool Cheese and Butter, and the Midfield Group's meat processing works make food manufacturing dominant. South West Healthcare is the sub-regional referral centre, and Deakin's Warrnambool campus was retained after the university abandoned its restructure in June 2026.

South West Healthcare, Saputo Dairy Australia, The Midfield Group and Warrnambool City Council are among the largest employers in Warrnambool. Most ambulance paramedics here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.

Role

What the job involves

Paramedics respond to emergency and urgent calls in the community, assessing and treating patients at the scene and transporting them to hospital where needed. They work from ambulances, rapid response vehicles, aircraft and event and industrial sites, making autonomous clinical decisions under clinical practice guidelines, often in uncontrolled environments.

  • Respond to triple zero and urgent calls, assessing scene safety and patient acuity on arrival
  • Perform rapid clinical assessment, ECG acquisition and interpretation, and vital sign monitoring
  • Provide advanced life support, including airway management, defibrillation and resuscitation
  • Administer medicines under clinical practice guidelines, including analgesia, cardiac and respiratory drugs
  • Manage trauma — haemorrhage control, splinting, spinal care and extrication with fire and rescue services
  • Make referral, treat-in-place and non-transport decisions and connect patients with alternative pathways
  • Provide clinical handover to emergency department staff and complete electronic patient care records
  • Check and restock vehicles and drugs, maintain equipment and support students and graduate paramedics

Training

Qualifications and training

  • Bachelor of Paramedicine or Bachelor of Paramedic Science (three years, AQF Level 7) from a program approved by the Paramedicine Board of Australia
  • General registration as a paramedic with the Paramedicine Board of Australia via Ahpra — a separate registration from nursing, with its own registration standards and mandatory professional indemnity insurance
  • A graduate or internship year with a state ambulance service, leading to service-based qualification or clinical release to practise independently
  • For intensive care and critical care paramedic roles: a postgraduate qualification plus the employing service's internal ICP training and clinical portfolio
  • A current, appropriate class of driver licence and, for most services, additional emergency driving certification
