Local market

Who hires bricklayers in Launceston

Launceston is the service capital of northern Tasmania, capturing on average around 75 per cent of retail market share from surrounding local council areas. Health care and social assistance is the largest employer at close to 20 per cent of working residents, centred on the 300-bed Launceston General Hospital, which handles over 24,000 inpatients a year and serves as the state's medical retrieval hub. The University of Tasmania runs its second-largest campus here and is progressively relocating from Newnham into a new city campus at Inveresk, reshaping the CBD, while the surrounding Tamar Valley supplies wool, agriculture and a viticulture sector that increasingly underpins the visitor economy.

Launceston General Hospital (Department of Health Tasmania), University of Tasmania (Launceston / Inveresk campus, including the Australian Maritime College) and City of Launceston are among the largest employers in Launceston. Most bricklayers here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.
