Who hires carpenters in Darwin
Darwin's economy rests on the Northern Territory public service and a large permanent Defence presence at Robertson Barracks, RAAF Base Darwin and Larrakeyah, supplemented each year by the US Marine Rotational Force. INPEX's Ichthys LNG facility at Bladin Point is the largest private industrial employer. The dry season from roughly May to September drives a pronounced peak in tourism, construction and outdoor work, with activity slowing sharply through the wet.
Northern Territory Government, Top End Health Service (Royal Darwin Hospital), Charles Darwin University and City of Darwin are among the largest employers in Darwin. Most carpenters here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.
Largest employing industries
159,284 people (Greater Darwin (GCCSA), ABS Estimated Resident Population at 30 June 2025).
