Local market

Who hires carpenters in Mildura

Mildura is the hub of the Sunraysia irrigation district on the Murray, and horticulture shapes its labour market more than almost any other Australian city — table grapes, dried vine fruit, citrus, almonds and wine grapes generate very large seasonal picking, pruning and packing workforces concentrated between roughly January and April. Water allocations and drought conditions feed straight through to hiring. Health, retail and education provide the year-round employment base for a catchment that reaches well into NSW and South Australia.

Mildura Base Public Hospital, Mildura Rural City Council, SuniTAFE and La Trobe University (Mildura campus) are among the largest employers in Mildura. Most carpenters here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.
