Electricians jobs in Hobart

Electricians in Hobart do the same work as electricians anywhere in Australia, but who employs them, and under which licence, is local. Hobart's largest employing industries are Health care and social assistance, Retail trade and Education and training, which shapes both where the work is and how steady it tends to be. Licensing is set by Tasmania, not nationally — the requirements below are the ones that apply here.

Licensing

Licensing for electricians in TAS

A licence is required in every Australian state and territory before you can carry out electrical work — there is no unlicensed pathway anywhere in the country. Each jurisdiction has its own electrical regulator and its own licence classes, and a separate contractor licence or registration is needed if you want to contract directly to customers or run a business.

Tasmania
Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS), within the Department of Justice, issues electrical practitioner licences under the Occupational Licensing Act 2005. Licence classes include electrician, cable jointer and line worker, with a provisional licence available to overseas-trained applicants completing gap training. Contracting for electrical work requires an electrical contractor licence and public and products liability insurance.

Licensing rules change. Confirm with the regulator named above before quoting or contracting — this page is a starting point, not advice.

Who hires electricians in Hobart

Hobart is Australia's Antarctic gateway — the Australian Antarctic Division is headquartered at Kingston and the city is the home port for Antarctic research and Southern Ocean fishing vessels, giving it an unusual concentration of marine and polar science roles. The Royal Hobart Hospital and the University of Tasmania are the two largest single employers. Tourism and hospitality work is markedly seasonal, peaking over summer with MONA, cruise ship visits and the Sydney to Hobart finish.

Royal Hobart Hospital (Department of Health Tasmania), University of Tasmania, City of Hobart and Australian Antarctic Division are among the largest employers in Hobart. Most electricians here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.

Role

What the job involves

Electricians install, test, maintain and repair electrical wiring, switchboards, equipment and systems for homes, businesses and industrial sites, and must be licensed in every Australian state and territory.

  • Examining blueprints, wiring diagrams and specifications to determine the layout of an electrical installation
  • Measuring and laying out installation reference points, then selecting, cutting and connecting wire and cable
  • Using test instruments to diagnose faults in electrical circuits, equipment and appliances
  • Repairing and replacing faulty wiring, components and electrical equipment
  • Installing electrical switchboards and connecting electrical systems to the power supply
  • Testing circuit continuity and verifying that installations operate safely before commissioning

Training

Qualifications and training

  • Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820), the standard trade qualification, normally completed as a four-year Australian Apprenticeship (nominal duration 48 months full time, 72 months part time)
  • UEE30820 incorporates the Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council (ERAC) essential performance capabilities for an unrestricted electrician's licence; to obtain that licence in most jurisdictions the qualification must be completed as an apprenticeship or through a Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) pathway
  • Overseas-trained electricians typically go through a TRA skills assessment and any required gap training before a state or territory regulator will issue a licence
