Aged Care Nurses jobs in Queanbeyan

Aged Care Nurses in Queanbeyan do the same work as aged care nurses anywhere in Australia, but who employs them, and under which licence, is local. Queanbeyan's largest employing industries are Public administration and safety, Construction and Health care and social assistance, which shapes both where the work is and how steady it tends to be. Licensing is set by New South Wales, not nationally — the requirements below are the ones that apply here.

Licensing

Licensing for aged care nurses in NSW

Registration is national, not state-based. Nurses and midwives register once with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) through Ahpra under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, and that registration is recognised in every state and territory — you do not re-register when you move interstate, and there is no separate state nursing licence. What genuinely varies by jurisdiction is: who employs you (a private or not-for-profit aged care provider under the federal system, or a state public health service); which industrial instrument applies (the federal Nurses Award 2020 or a provider or state enterprise agreement); the state or territory drugs and poisons law that governs how you store, administer and supply scheduled medicines; and the local screening checks — police certificates, NDIS worker screening and working-with-children or vulnerable-people registration, each issued by a different agency in each jurisdiction. Aged care also adds Commonwealth requirements that apply everywhere: the Aged Care Quality Standards, police certificate or statutory declaration requirements, and mandatory registered nurse coverage and care minutes reporting for residential providers.

New South Wales
Public sector roles sit with the 15 Local Health Districts and specialty networks under the Public Health System Nurses' and Midwives' (State) Award, a NSW industrial instrument rather than the federal award; aged care providers remain in the federal system under the Nurses Award 2020 or their own agreement. Scheduled medicines are governed by the Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act 1966 (NSW) and Regulation. A Working With Children Check from the Office of the Children's Guardian applies to child-related roles; NSW Health also runs its own vaccination and Category A screening requirements.

Licensing rules change. Confirm with the regulator named above before quoting or contracting — this page is a starting point, not advice.

Local market

Who hires aged care nurses in Queanbeyan

Queanbeyan's labour market is functionally part of Canberra's — a large share of residents cross the ACT border daily for Commonwealth public service, defence and university work, so local conditions track Canberra rather than regional NSW. Googong, one of the state's largest greenfield estates, sustains construction and trades demand, and local light industry services ACT building work.

Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, Southern NSW Local Health District, Australian Public Service (ACT-based Commonwealth agencies) and Catholic Education Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn are among the largest employers in Queanbeyan. Most aged care nurses here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.
