Midwives, Neonatal, SCN and NICU Nurses jobs in Albany

Midwives, Neonatal, SCN and NICU Nurses in Albany do the same work as midwives, neonatal, scn and nicu nurses anywhere in Australia, but who employs them, and under which licence, is local. Albany's largest employing industries are Health Care and Social Assistance, Retail Trade, Agriculture and Forestry and Fishing, which shapes both where the work is and how steady it tends to be. Licensing is set by Western Australia, not nationally — the requirements below are the ones that apply here.

Licensing

Licensing for midwives, neonatal, scn and nicu nurses in WA

Midwifery registration is national, not state-based. Midwives register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through Ahpra under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, and that registration is recognised in every state and territory. Midwife is a separate registration from registered nurse — holding one does not give you the other, and many midwives hold both. Registration does not vary between states, but several things do: the employer (each state's public maternity services, or a private hospital), the industrial instrument (state nursing and midwifery enterprise agreements cover most public midwives rather than the federal Nurses Award 2020), each state's drugs and poisons law governing what a midwife may administer and supply, and privately practising midwifery requirements including professional indemnity insurance, eligible midwife notation and NMBA endorsement for scheduled medicines for those who prescribe. Working-with-children and vulnerable-people checks are also state-issued and are almost always required in maternity and neonatal settings.

Western Australia
WA Health delivers maternity care through metropolitan Health Service Providers, the Child and Adolescent Health Service and the WA Country Health Service, under a WA state industrial agreement. Medicines are regulated by the Medicines and Poisons Act 2014 (WA). Vast distances mean remote antenatal care, planned transfer to Perth or regional hubs, and the Newborn Emergency Transport Service are core parts of practice. A Working with Children Check (WA) is required.

Licensing rules change. Confirm with the regulator named above before quoting or contracting — this page is a starting point, not advice.

Local market

Who hires midwives, neonatal, scn and nicu nurses in Albany

Albany's mix is agricultural processing plus regional services. CBH's grain terminal and a dedicated woodchip berth at Southern Ports' Port of Albany move the Great Southern harvest and plantation estate, Fletcher International's Narrikup plant processes sheep and lambs at export scale, and Albany Health Campus serves the whole Great Southern.

City of Albany, WA Country Health Service (Albany Health Campus), Southern Ports (Port of Albany) and CBH Group (Albany grain terminal) are among the largest employers in Albany. Most midwives, neonatal, scn and nicu nurses here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.

Role

What the job involves

Midwives provide care to women and birthing people through pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period, while neonatal nurses care for premature and unwell newborns in special care nurseries and neonatal intensive care units. Both roles combine close clinical monitoring with hands-on support for families at an intense time.

  • Provide antenatal assessment, screening, education and continuity-of-care visits
  • Assess and support women through labour, including fetal monitoring, analgesia and water immersion
  • Conduct normal births, manage third stage and recognise and escalate obstetric emergencies
  • Provide immediate newborn care, resuscitation, assessment and skin-to-skin support
  • Deliver postnatal care, including perineal and wound care, lactation and breastfeeding support and discharge planning
  • In SCN and NICU, manage thermoregulation, respiratory support, CPAP and ventilation, IV lines, feeds and developmental care for preterm infants
  • Support families through complex and bereavement care, including stillbirth and neonatal loss
  • Document care and screening results, and refer to obstetricians, paediatricians, social work and child health services

Training

Qualifications and training

  • Bachelor of Midwifery (three years, direct entry) from an Ahpra-approved program, leading to registration as a midwife
  • Graduate Diploma or Master of Midwifery for registered nurses converting to midwifery (typically 18 months to two years)
  • Registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia via Ahpra — a separate registration from registered nurse registration, with midwifery-specific CPD, recency and continuity-of-care requirements
  • For neonatal roles: registration as a registered nurse (or midwife) plus a Graduate Certificate in Neonatal Nursing or Neonatal Intensive Care and unit competency programs
  • Optional NMBA endorsement for scheduled medicines (eligible midwife) to prescribe within the midwifery scope, and Master of Nurse Practitioner for neonatal nurse practitioner roles
