What is BAS agent?
Finance & accounting. A plain-English definition for Australian business owners.
A BAS agent is a professional registered with the Tax Practitioners Board to provide BAS services for a fee — preparing and lodging Business Activity Statements and advising on the obligations they cover: GST, PAYG withholding and payroll-related superannuation.
The distinction from a tax agent matters: a tax agent's registration also covers income tax returns and broader tax advice, which a BAS agent cannot legally provide. Many SME bookkeepers are registered BAS agents, and lodging through one generally attracts extended lodgement deadlines. If an unregistered provider is preparing your BAS for a fee, that is itself a compliance problem.
In a connected back office this sits with the Finance hub, where Valont runs bookkeeping, managed payroll and bas & tax compliance for Australian SMEs as one team. The full definition set is on the glossary.
