What is Essential Eight maturity levels?
Operations, IT, cybersecurity. A plain-English definition for Australian business owners.
Essential Eight maturity levels are the Australian Signals Directorate's scale for measuring how thoroughly an organisation has implemented the eight Essential Eight mitigation strategies.
The model runs from Maturity Level Zero (significant gaps) through Levels One to Three, each pitched against increasingly capable attacker tradecraft — Level One addresses commodity attacks, Level Three more adaptive adversaries. A target level should match the organisation's threat profile, and assessment is made against the ASD's current published criteria across all eight strategies together, not one at a time. Contracts, insurers and government supply chains increasingly ask SMEs to evidence a specific level.
In a connected back office this sits with the Operations hub, where Valont runs it support, cybersecurity and cloud systems for Australian SMEs as one team. The full definition set is on the glossary.
