Deciding whether an alert is noise or the start of an incident, whether to isolate a machine, whether anyone needs to be notified — these are judgement calls with real consequences. AI can surface the signals; a human must make the call.
Anything touching money or identity
Changing bank details, granting new access, elevating permissions, processing an urgent payment request from the director — these are precisely the requests attackers forge. They should always require human verification, no matter how confident the AI sounds.
Physical and network work
Cabling, hardware failures, Wi-Fi dead spots, a new office fit-out — AI cannot hold a screwdriver. A service that leans entirely on AI has quietly excluded a large part of what IT support actually is.
Accountability
When something goes wrong, someone must own the outcome — explain it, fix it and answer for it. Software cannot be accountable. If a provider cannot tell you who owns an AI-caused mistake, that is your answer.
REGULATION
The Australian rules
The Australian Signals Directorate's Australian Cyber Security Centre (ASD's ACSC) publishes the Essential Eight: eight baseline mitigation strategies that, in the ACSC's words, make it 'much harder for adversaries to compromise systems'. It is the Australian government’s baseline reference for hardening business systems, and an AI service desk should operate inside it, not around it — multi-factor authentication, patching, backups and restricted administrative privileges still do the heavy lifting.
In January 2026, ASD's ACSC — together with the New Zealand National Cyber Security Centre and the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia — published guidance titled Artificial intelligence for small business: managing cyber security risks. Its recommendations are practical: review the configuration settings, terms and privacy policies of any AI platform before relying on it; set an internal AI use policy that defines what data must never be uploaded; and train staff on responsible use, especially around sensitive and proprietary information.
None of this is AI-specific red tape. It is the same discipline that applies to any tool that touches your systems and your data — and it doubles as a fair test of a provider. Ask how their AI service desk lines up against the Essential Eight and the ACSC's AI guidance. A good one will have an answer ready.
