What the Live Performance Award covers

The Live Performance Award 2020 (MA000081) is the modern award that sets minimum pay and conditions for employers and employees in the live performance industry across Australia. It reaches across the whole production - performers, musicians and dancers on stage, and the crew, technical and production staff behind it - in theatre, opera, dance, orchestral and musical performance, variety, comedy and similar live work. If you produce or stage live performances and engage people in the award's classifications, this is generally the award you apply. Its system of calls and per-performance engagement, and its high late-night and Sunday penalties, make it one of the more intricate awards to pay correctly.

Who it covers

  • Employers throughout Australia in the live performance industry and their employees in the award's classifications
  • Performers, actors, singers, musicians and dancers engaged in live theatre, opera, dance, orchestral, musical, variety and comedy work
  • Production, technical and support staff, including lighting, audio, staging, wardrobe, front-of-house and crewing-services employees
  • It does not cover film and television production or broadcasting work covered by other awards, such as the Broadcasting, Recorded Entertainment and Cinemas Award

How pay is structured

MA000081 sets minimum rates across a wide band of classification levels covering performers, musicians, dancers and production and technical staff, with each level defined by the role, skills and responsibilities involved. You place each person at the level matching the work they actually do, then pay at least that minimum. The award is built around engagement by calls and performances rather than a simple weekly roster - minimum call lengths apply, musicians are engaged on a distinct call-based calculation, and additional or extra performances can attract extra payment. Full-time, part-time and casual engagement all apply, along with weekly and short-term arrangements. Minimum rates are reviewed each year in the Annual Wage Review and increase from the first full pay period on or after 1 July; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums. Always confirm the current rate for a given classification on the Fair Work Pay Calculator rather than relying on a remembered figure.

Penalties & loadings

On top of the minimum rate, MA000081 layers substantial penalties for evening, late-night, weekend and public holiday work, overtime, casual loading and a distinctive set of industry allowances. Sunday and late-night work attract high penalties that can exceed the common guides, and public holiday work can reach up to 150%, with Saturday work also penalised. Overtime is paid at penalty rates that step up with the hours worked. Casuals receive a loading, commonly 25% as a guide. The award's allowances reflect the work - touring and travel, a driver allowance for on-tour driving, an understudy allowance, a recording allowance when a performance is recorded, and meal allowances for back-to-back performances. Annual leave loading is 17.5%. Confirm every current penalty and allowance against the Fair Work source before paying.

We deliberately don’t republish dollar figures here because they change each 1 July; the Fair Work source is always current.

Where employers get caught

Common Live Performance Award compliance traps

Paying a flat rate instead of by calls and performances

The award engages people through calls and performances with minimum call lengths, and musicians use a distinct call-based calculation. Treating a week of performances as a flat salary can miss minimum-call entitlements and any extra-performance payments. Map each person's calls and performances to the award's structure rather than paying a single weekly figure.

Underpaying high late-night and Sunday penalties

Live performance runs into the evening and across weekends, and the award's penalties for late-night and Sunday work can be substantial - higher than the across-award guides. Applying a generic weekend loading understates what is owed for a Sunday matinee-and-evening or a midnight finish. Confirm the actual penalty for the relevant time and day on the Fair Work source.

Missing touring, understudy and recording allowances

The award provides allowances tied to the realities of the work, including touring and travel, a driver allowance for on-tour driving, an understudy allowance, and a recording allowance when a performance is captured. These are easy to overlook because they apply only in certain circumstances. Identify which apply to each engagement and pay them on top of the minimum rate.

Skipping meal allowances on back-to-back performances

The award provides meal allowances for back-to-back performances, recognising the matinee-and-evening pattern common in live work. Because they apply only when shows run consecutively, they are easy to omit when a cast plays two performances in a day. Identify which engagements involve back-to-back performances and pay the meal allowance on top of the call and performance rates.
