Is labouring a licensed occupation?

No. No Australian state or territory issues a labourer's licence. Building regulators such as the QBCC, NSW Fair Trading, the Victorian Building and Plumbing Commission and Consumer and Business Services in SA license builders and trade contractors, but a labourer working under a licensed builder does not need a licence.

Does my white card work interstate?

Construction induction cards are broadly recognised across jurisdictions under mutual recognition, so a card issued in one state is generally accepted in another. Some jurisdictions ask you to convert to a local card if you relocate permanently - check with the WHS regulator in the state you are moving to.

Which award covers construction labourers?

The Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 (MA000020) covers most on-site construction labouring. Labourers in workplaces not covered by an industry-specific award may fall under the Miscellaneous Award 2020 (MA000104). Large projects are frequently covered by an enterprise agreement instead.

How do I move from labouring into a trade?

Two routes work well. Complete CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways, which gives credit toward a construction apprenticeship, or convert an existing labouring relationship with a builder into an apprenticeship. Time on the tools as a labourer is itself strong evidence when applying.

What extra tickets are worth getting?

Dogging and rigging, forklift, elevating work platform, scaffolding and traffic control are the tickets that most reliably lift both your pay classification and the range of sites that will take you. All are high risk work licences issued by your state or territory WHS regulator.

Do I need a white card for non-construction labouring?

Only construction work triggers the requirement. Labouring in a warehouse, factory or on a farm does not require a construction induction card, though the employer will still have to provide WHS induction and training appropriate to that workplace.
