Licensing

Licensing by state

Registration is national. Nurse educators hold ordinary general registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through Ahpra, valid in every state and territory, and there is no separate educator endorsement or state teaching licence for nursing education. Educators must still meet recency of practice and CPD requirements, which is why most hold a clinical component in their role. What varies by jurisdiction is the employer (each state's public health system, private hospital and aged care groups, universities and RTOs), the industrial instrument — hospital-based educators usually sit under a state nursing enterprise agreement or the Nurses Award 2020, university academics under the Higher Education Industry—Academic Staff—Award 2020 or an institutional agreement, and VET teachers under the relevant education instrument — plus the state screening checks needed to enter clinical facilities, and the additional VET requirements set nationally by ASQA where the educator delivers accredited training.
