Midwives, Neonatal, SCN and NICU Nurses jobs in Traralgon
Midwives, Neonatal, SCN and NICU Nurses in Traralgon do the same work as midwives, neonatal, scn and nicu nurses anywhere in Australia, but who employs them, and under which licence, is local. Traralgon's largest employing industries are Health care and social assistance, Manufacturing and Retail trade, which shapes both where the work is and how steady it tends to be. Licensing is set by Victoria, not nationally — the requirements below are the ones that apply here.

Licensing
Licensing for midwives, neonatal, scn and nicu nurses in VIC
Midwifery registration is national, not state-based. Midwives register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through Ahpra under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, and that registration is recognised in every state and territory. Midwife is a separate registration from registered nurse — holding one does not give you the other, and many midwives hold both. Registration does not vary between states, but several things do: the employer (each state's public maternity services, or a private hospital), the industrial instrument (state nursing and midwifery enterprise agreements cover most public midwives rather than the federal Nurses Award 2020), each state's drugs and poisons law governing what a midwife may administer and supply, and privately practising midwifery requirements including professional indemnity insurance, eligible midwife notation and NMBA endorsement for scheduled medicines for those who prescribe. Working-with-children and vulnerable-people checks are also state-issued and are almost always required in maternity and neonatal settings.
- Victoria
- Victorian public health services employ midwives under the Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Sector) (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement, and Victoria's legislated midwife-to-patient ratios under the Safe Patient Care Act 2015 apply to maternity units — the only such legislated ratios in the country. Medicines fall under the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981 (Vic). A Victorian Working with Children Check is required, and neonatal retrieval is coordinated by PIPER.

Local market
Who hires midwives, neonatal, scn and nicu nurses in Traralgon
The Latrobe Valley is mid-transition out of brown coal: AGL's Loy Yang A is slated to close by 2035, and Opal Australian Paper's Maryvale Mill ended white paper production in 2023 once its VicForests timber supply stopped, then cut a further 84 roles in June 2026. Latrobe Regional Health, Gippsland's referral hospital, is now the region's largest employer.
Latrobe Regional Health, Latrobe City Council, AGL Energy (Loy Yang A) and Opal Australian Paper (Maryvale Mill) are among the largest employers in Traralgon. Most midwives, neonatal, scn and nicu nurses here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.
Largest employing industries
79,112 people (Latrobe City Council area (Local Government Area, covering Traralgon, Morwell, Moe and Churchill), ABS Estimated Resident Population at 30 June 2025 (preliminary). The Traralgon urban centre itself is far smaller.).
