Plumbers jobs in Rockhampton

Plumbers in Rockhampton do the same work as plumbers anywhere in Australia, but who employs them, and under which licence, is local. Rockhampton's largest employing industries are Health care and social assistance, Retail trade and Education and training, which shapes both where the work is and how steady it tends to be. Licensing is set by Queensland, not nationally — the requirements below are the ones that apply here.

Licensing

Licensing for plumbers in QLD

A licence or registration is required in every Australian state and territory before you can carry out plumbing work — there is no unlicensed pathway anywhere in the country. Each jurisdiction has its own plumbing regulator, its own licence classes and its own split between doing the work, supervising it, certifying it and contracting directly to customers.

Queensland
The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) issues plumbing and drainage licences. An occupational plumber and/or drainer licence allows an individual to work in the trade, with restricted classes such as restricted water plumber and restricted drainer for on-site sewage facilities. Contractor, nominee supervisor and site supervisor licences cover running a business, supervising work and lodging notifiable work with the QBCC.

Licensing rules change. Confirm with the regulator named above before quoting or contracting — this page is a starting point, not advice.

Local market

Who hires plumbers in Rockhampton

Rockhampton's claim to be Australia's beef capital is economically literal — large export abattoirs operated by Teys and JBS are among the biggest private employers and the region's saleyards serve all of central Queensland. CQUniversity is headquartered in the city, and the Rockhampton Hospital is the region's main referral centre. The Shoalwater Bay Training Area to the north brings periodic large-scale Defence exercises, and the city services Bowen and Galilee Basin mining traffic.

Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service, CQUniversity, Rockhampton Regional Council and Teys Australia (Lakes Creek) are among the largest employers in Rockhampton. Most plumbers here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.

  • Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (CPC40920) is the higher qualification required for supervisory and contracting credentials in some jurisdictions — NSW, for example, requires CPC40920 or later plus two years of combined industry experience for a plumbing contractor licence or qualified supervisor certificate
  • CPC32420 offers occupational specialisation streams, so apprentices can build towards work in areas such as drainage, gasfitting, roof plumbing and mechanical services
