What is Back-office capability gap?

Category-defining vocabulary. A plain-English definition for Australian business owners.

The back-office capability gap is the space between the operating capability a growing SME needs — across finance, people, operations and growth — and the full-time specialist team it can economically justify hiring.

A business too big to run on the owner and a bookkeeper, but too small to employ a CFO, an HR manager, an IT lead and a marketing lead, sits in the gap. It is a structural reason the connected back office exists: it delivers the capability without the full-time headcount. See The Back-Office Capability Gap for the full treatment.

Valont publishes the full explanation of this term, with examples and a diagnostic, on its own page.

In a connected back office this sits with the Finance hub, where Valont runs bookkeeping, managed payroll and bas & tax compliance for Australian SMEs as one team. The full definition set is on the glossary.
