What is SME back office?
Category-defining vocabulary. A plain-English definition for Australian business owners.
An SME back office is the finance, people, operations and technology work every small business must run to function — bookkeeping, BAS, payroll, superannuation, HR and award compliance, IT, and the operational side of marketing.
The term describes the work itself, not any one way of delivering it: every small business runs a back office, whether it lives with the owner, an internal hire, or the Australian default of five or six unconnected providers. The modern form is the connected back office — one integrated team under one accountable Trusted Advisor and one shared data layer. See The SME Back Office for the full treatment.
Valont publishes the full explanation of this term, with examples and a diagnostic, on its own page.
In a connected back office this sits with the Finance hub, where Valont runs bookkeeping, managed payroll and bas & tax compliance for Australian SMEs as one team. The full definition set is on the glossary.
