What the Ambulance & Patient Transport Award covers
The Ambulance and Patient Transport Industry Award 2020 (MA000098) is the modern award covering employers and employees in the ambulance and patient transport industry throughout Australia. It sets minimum rates and conditions for operational roles such as ambulance officers and attendants, paramedics and students, patient transport and clinical transport officers, communications staff and fleet maintenance, alongside a clerical and administrative stream. Because it combines a detailed paramedic and operational classification structure with a layer of skill, shift and weekend allowances and penalties, it takes care to pay correctly across a round-the-clock service.
Who it covers
- Employers throughout Australia in the ambulance and patient transport industry and their employees in the listed classifications
- Operational staff including ambulance officers and attendants, paramedics, student paramedics, patient transport officers, clinical transport officers and communications call takers
- Fleet maintenance officers and mechanics who service the ambulance and patient transport fleet
- Clerical and administrative support employees graded across the award's administrative bands
How pay is structured
MA000098 sets minimum rates against an operational classification structure and a separate clerical and administrative stream. The operational structure runs from student and trainee levels through ambulance attendant, ambulance officer, patient transport officer, clinical transport officer and communications call taker, up to assistant station officer, station officer/team manager and senior station officer, with fleet maintenance officer and mechanic roles alongside. Administrative officers are graded across bands with year-based progression. Full-time employees work 38 ordinary hours a week (or an average of 38), part-timers work fewer agreed hours, and casuals are paid by the hour. The award also allows a 40-hour roster arrangement that provides additional paid leave or an accrued day off in exchange. The current minimum weekly and hourly rate for each classification should always be taken from the Fair Work Pay Calculator or the award's pay guide, as they change with each Annual Wage Review. Minimum rates rise from the first full pay period on or after 1 July each year; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums.
Penalties & loadings
On top of the minimum rate, MA000098 layers weekend penalties for Saturday and Sunday work, higher public holiday rates, shift loadings and several overtime tiers, and it expresses some of these as a combined percentage of the ordinary rate rather than as a separate add-on. It also carries a distinctive set of industry allowances: a paramedic skills allowance, communications centre, operational crewing, flying, on-call and control call allowances, along with expense-related meal, overtime meal, spoilt meal, relieving, travelling (per kilometre), uniform and protective clothing, and driving licence allowances. As a general guide across awards, casual loading is commonly 25%, weekend penalties commonly run around 25% on Saturday and 50% on Sunday, public holidays can reach up to 150%, and annual leave loading is 17.5% - but this award sets its own figures, including casual loading that lifts on weekends and public holidays, so the exact rate for each penalty and allowance must always be confirmed against the Fair Work source for MA000098.
For the exact current figures — rates, allowances and penalty percentages by classification — use the official source: Ambulance and Patient Transport Industry Award — pay rates, allowances & full conditions on Fair Work. We deliberately don’t republish dollar figures here because they change each 1 July; the Fair Work source is always current.
Where employers get caught
Common Ambulance & Patient Transport Award compliance traps
Missing the paramedic skills allowance
The award provides a paramedic skills allowance with more than one level reflecting clinical practice level. Failing to pay it, or paying the lower level when the higher applies, understates wages for qualified clinical staff. Confirm which level applies to each employee and the current amount from the Fair Work source.
Reading weekend and public holiday penalties as add-ons
MA000098 expresses some weekend and public holiday rates as a total percentage of the ordinary rate, not as a loading bolted onto the base. Treating a quoted figure as an add-on, or vice versa, can over- or under-pay. Read the provision exactly as written and verify the current percentage via Fair Work.
Overlooking per-shift and on-call allowances
Communications centre, operational crewing, flying, on-call and control call allowances are paid per shift or per hour for specific duties, and meal, spoilt meal and relieving allowances arise in defined circumstances. On a 24/7 roster these are easy to miss. Identify which apply to each role and shift and confirm amounts from the Fair Work source.
Mishandling the 40-hour roster trade-off
The award allows a 40-hour roster where the two extra hours are exchanged for additional paid leave each year or an accrued day off in each four-week cycle. Paying those hours as ordinary time without granting the leave or accrued day off, or treating them as overtime, breaks the arrangement and either underpays the employee or overstates the cost.
