What the Fire Fighting Industry Award covers

The Fire Fighting Industry Award 2020 (MA000111) is the modern award covering employers and employees throughout Australia in the fire fighting industry. It applies to operational firefighting and rescue work, the handling of hazardous material spills, fire prevention, and the sale, supply, installation, maintenance, repair and inspection of fire protection equipment. Because it pairs a ranked firefighter classification structure with continuous shift rosters and a layer of all-purpose allowances and penalties, it takes care to pay correctly across a round-the-clock service.

Who it covers

  • Employers throughout Australia in the fire fighting industry and their employees in the listed classifications
  • Operational staff who suppress fires and provide rescue services at accidents, explosions and emergencies (other than police, ambulance, State Emergency Service or military)
  • Employees who handle spillages of toxic or hazardous materials in emergency situations and carry out fire prevention work
  • Staff engaged in the sale, supply, installation, maintenance, repair and inspection of fire protection equipment, plus fire service communications roles

How pay is structured

MA000111 sets minimum rates against a ranked classification structure that runs from Recruit and Firefighter levels through Qualified Firefighter and Leading Firefighter up to Station Officer and Senior Station Officer, with a Fire Service Communications Controller role alongside. Progression generally turns on service, qualifications and appointment rather than age. The award accommodates both day work and continuous shift rosters, including a 10/14 roster worked as an average of 42 hours a week, as well as ordinary-hours arrangements for non-shift employees. Many allowances are paid for all purposes, meaning they are built into the rate used to calculate penalties, loadings and leave. The current minimum weekly and hourly rate for each classification should always be taken from the Fair Work Pay Calculator or the award's pay guide, as they change with each Annual Wage Review. Minimum rates rise from the first full pay period on or after 1 July each year; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums.

Penalties & loadings

On top of the minimum rate, MA000111 layers shiftwork loadings, weekend and public holiday penalties and several overtime tiers, and it treats many allowances as payable for all purposes. Shiftworkers attract a shift penalty for each ordinary hour worked, and the award sets distinctive industry allowances including qualification allowances for fire safety certificates, a first aid allowance, a heavy rescue appliance allowance, a special administrative duties allowance, and a relieving allowance, alongside expense-related meal, travelling, vehicle (per kilometre) and uniform and equipment provisions. Station Officers not on the 10/14 roster who must remain available after hours receive an availability loading on their total weekly rate, counted for all purposes. As a general guide across awards, casual loading is commonly 25%, weekend penalties commonly run around 25% on Saturday and 50% on Sunday, public holidays can reach up to 150%, and annual leave loading is 17.5% - but this award sets its own figures, so the exact rate for every penalty, loading and allowance must always be confirmed against the Fair Work source for MA000111.

We deliberately don’t republish dollar figures here because they change each 1 July; the Fair Work source is always current.

Where employers get caught

Common Fire Fighting Industry Award compliance traps

Treating all-purpose allowances as separate add-ons

MA000111 pays many allowances for all purposes, so they form part of the rate used to calculate penalties, overtime, loadings and leave - not a flat amount paid alongside an unchanged base. Leaving them out of the all-purpose rate quietly understates penalty and leave payments. Identify which allowances are all-purpose and build them into the rate, confirming current amounts from the Fair Work source.

Mishandling the 10/14 roster's 42-hour average

Employees on the 10/14 roster work an average of 42 hours a week, with part of that excess treated as overtime and part taken as leave under the roster. Paying a flat 42 hours at ordinary rates, or mismanaging the leave component, misstates pay. Set up the roster exactly as the award provides and verify the treatment against Fair Work.

Missing qualification, first aid and appliance allowances

The award provides qualification allowances tied to fire safety certificates, a first aid allowance, a heavy rescue appliance allowance and a special administrative duties allowance, each payable in defined circumstances. On a busy operational roster these are easy to overlook. Check which allowances each employee is entitled to and confirm the current amounts from the Fair Work source.

Ignoring the recall-to-duty minimum payment

When an operational firefighter is recalled to duty outside rostered hours, MA000111 typically guarantees a minimum payment rather than paying only the actual time worked. Paying a short call-back at plain time for the minutes attended, with no minimum applied, understates what is owed on an emergency-response roster. Identify which call-outs trigger the recall minimum and confirm the current figure on the Fair Work source.
