What the Market and Social Research Award covers
The Market and Social Research Award 2020 (MA000030) is the modern award that sets minimum pay and conditions for employers and employees in the market and social research industry across Australia. It covers businesses that gather and analyse data through interviewing and field work, including telephone, face-to-face, online and mall-intercept surveys, as well as the coding, editing and administrative work that supports them. If you run a research firm or a fieldwork operation and employ interviewers or office staff who are not award-free, this is usually the instrument that applies.
Who it covers
- Employers throughout Australia in the market and social research industry, including firms conducting opinion polling, consumer surveys and social and statistical research
- Field and contact-centre roles such as telephone, in-person, online and intercept interviewers, supervisors, recruiters, coders and validators
- Office-based and administrative employees who support the research process across full-time, part-time and casual engagement
- It does not cover work captured by other awards, such as general contact centre work under the Contract Call Centres Award or clerical work that properly falls under the Clerks - Private Sector Award
How pay is structured
MA000030 sets minimum rates through a set of classification levels defined by the skills, judgement and responsibility a role requires, from entry-level interviewing and data work up to supervisory and senior coding bands (the level definitions sit in the classifications schedule of the award). You place each employee at the level that matches the work they genuinely do, then pay at least the minimum for that level. Rather than age-based junior rates, the award provides a market research trainee classification defined by training and earnings rather than age. Those minimums are reviewed every year in the Annual Wage Review and rise from the first full pay period on or after 1 July; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums. Always confirm the current rate for a given classification against the Fair Work Pay Calculator rather than relying on a remembered figure.
Penalties & loadings
Because interviewing often runs into evenings and weekends, this award leans heavily on penalty rates. Saturday and Sunday ordinary hours attract loadings (as a guide, Saturday is commonly around 25% and Sunday around 50%), and public holiday work is paid at a substantial premium that can reach up to 150%. Evening or shift work may also attract a loading depending on when the hours fall. Casual employees receive a loading on top of the minimum rate, commonly 25% across modern awards. The award provides for allowances relevant to field work, which can include a motor vehicle allowance, a telephone allowance, a relocation allowance, reimbursement of work expenses and an allowance for damage to or theft of personal effects. Annual leave loading is 17.5%. Confirm every current penalty and allowance figure against the Fair Work Pay Calculator before paying, as the exact percentages and amounts change.
For the exact current figures — rates, allowances and penalty percentages by classification — use the official source: Market and Social Research Award — pay rates, allowances & full conditions on Fair Work. We deliberately don’t republish dollar figures here because they change each 1 July; the Fair Work source is always current.
Where employers get caught
Common Market and Social Research Award compliance traps
Treating interviewers as casual by default when they are really part-time
Field research uses a lot of casuals, but a worker on a regular, predictable pattern of evening or weekend interviewing shifts may in substance be part-time, with the leave and notice entitlements that brings. Defaulting everyone to casual and paying a flat loading can create an underpayment if the real arrangement is part-time. Assess the pattern of work, not just the label.
Missing evening, weekend and public-holiday penalties on a survey roster
Telephone and face-to-face research is often done outside business hours to reach respondents, so a single flat hourly rate frequently understates what is owed. Saturday, Sunday and public holiday penalties, and any evening or shift loading, must be applied on top of the minimum. Map each shift's day and time and confirm the rates on the Fair Work source.
Misclassifying coders, supervisors and recruiters
Roles such as field supervisors, senior coders and recruitment staff carry more responsibility than entry-level interviewing and sit at a higher classification level. Paying everyone at the lowest band, or guessing the level, is a common source of underpayment. Use the award's classification definitions to place each role correctly.
Overlooking field-work allowances for interviewers
The award provides allowances tied to research field work, including a motor vehicle allowance for work travel, a telephone allowance where staff use their own phone, and an allowance for damage to or theft of personal effects. Paying interviewers only an hourly rate, with no reimbursement for using their own car or phone, misses entitlements this award specifically provides. Identify which apply to each role and confirm the amounts.
