What the Pharmacy Industry Award covers
The Pharmacy Industry Award 2020 (MA000012) is the modern award that sets minimum pay and conditions for employers and employees in the community pharmacy industry across Australia. It covers the staff who run a community (retail) pharmacy dispensary, from pharmacists and pharmacy interns to pharmacy assistants, technicians and dispensary support, along with the retail and administrative roles in a pharmacy business. The award applies to community pharmacy only and does not cover hospital pharmacies, where pharmacists fall under a health-sector award instead. Because pharmacies trade evenings, weekends and public holidays, the award carries a substantial layer of penalty rates, which makes correct rostering and pay one of the more involved parts of running a pharmacy. This is a retail pharmacy award, separate from the pharmaceutical manufacturing award.
Who it covers
- Employers operating community (retail) pharmacies throughout Australia, and their employees engaged in pharmacy work
- Pharmacists, pharmacy interns and pharmacy students, plus pharmacy assistants, dispensary technicians and retail support staff
- Full-time, part-time and casual employees across the trading week, including the evening and weekend hours that pharmacies commonly operate
- It does not cover hospital pharmacies (pharmacists there fall under a health-sector award), pharmaceutical manufacturing (the Pharmaceutical Industry Award applies there) or general retail outside a pharmacy
How pay is structured
MA000012 sets minimum rates through classification levels that reflect both retail/support roles and the professional pharmacist stream in a community pharmacy dispensary. Pharmacy assistants and dispensary staff are graded by skill and responsibility, while pharmacists are classified by registration and experience, with higher bands for pharmacist in charge, experienced and managing pharmacists. Junior rates apply as a percentage of the adult rate for younger retail employees, full-time staff work an average 38 ordinary hours a week, and part-time and casual engagement is provided for. Minimum rates are reviewed every year in the Annual Wage Review and rise from the first full pay period on or after 1 July; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums. Because the pharmacist bands and the support classifications move each year, confirm the current rate for any role against the Fair Work Pay Calculator rather than a remembered figure.
Penalties & loadings
Penalty rates are central to pharmacy payroll because of the trading hours. MA000012 applies loadings for ordinary hours worked in the evening and on weekends, plus public holiday rates and overtime. As a guide across awards, casual loading is commonly 25%, Saturday penalties commonly around 25% and Sunday around 50%, with public holiday work reaching up to 150%, and annual leave loading is 17.5%; but the precise figures this award sets, including how evening and weekend loadings apply to each employee type, must be confirmed at the Fair Work source. The award also provides allowances relevant to pharmacy, which may include meal, motor vehicle, clothing or laundry, home-medicines-review and Broken Hill allowances. Identify which apply to each role and confirm every current amount against the Fair Work Pay Calculator before paying.

We deliberately don’t republish dollar figures here because they change each 1 July; the Fair Work source is always current.
Where employers get caught
Common Pharmacy Industry Award compliance traps
Underpaying evening and weekend penalty rates
Pharmacies routinely trade into the evening and across weekends, and the award attaches loadings to those ordinary hours that are easy to miss with a flat hourly rate. Failing to apply the correct evening, Saturday and Sunday loadings, particularly for casual staff who may have different mechanics, is a frequent source of pharmacy underpayment. Confirm each loading on the Fair Work source.
Classifying pharmacists by title rather than band
The pharmacist stream has several bands tied to registration, experience and responsibility, including pharmacist in charge and managing roles, each with its own minimum rate. Pharmacist in charge is a classification, not an allowance, and supervisory pay comes through the higher classification rate. Paying every pharmacist the entry rate, or not recognising a pharmacist in charge, underpays them. Use the award's pharmacist classifications and confirm the current rate on the Fair Work source.
Paying interns on the wrong basis
Pharmacy interns and students are a distinct group from registered pharmacists and from junior retail assistants, yet they are easily defaulted onto a retail-assistant rate or a junior percentage. The award treats the pharmacist stream by registration and experience, so an intern completing supervised practice has their own correct rate. Confirm the intern's classification on the Fair Work source rather than lumping them with retail staff.
Treating juniors and casuals as one simple calculation
Younger retail staff are paid junior percentages of the adult rate, and casuals receive a loading that can interact with evening and weekend penalties. Combining a junior rate with weekend casual loadings is where pharmacy pay often goes wrong. Work through the junior percentage and casual loading separately and confirm both against the Fair Work Pay Calculator.
