What the Sporting Organisations Award covers
The Sporting Organisations Award 2020 (MA000082) is the modern award that sets minimum pay and conditions for employees of sporting and recreational organisations across Australia. It reaches the bodies that run, administer and support sport at every level, from local and regional clubs and associations through to state and national sporting organisations. Think groundskeepers preparing playing surfaces, administration and development staff, and the people who keep a club or league operating week to week. If your organisation's purpose is conducting or supporting sport and your staff are not award-free, this is usually the award that applies.
Who it covers
- Employers throughout Australia whose primary activity is the conduct, administration, promotion or support of sport and recreation, including clubs, leagues, associations and state and national sporting bodies
- Roles spanning sport administration, development and promotion, ground and facility maintenance, and operational and clerical support within those organisations
- Full-time, part-time and casual employees engaged by sporting organisations to perform that work
- It does not cover professional athletes or players, nor work covered by other awards such as the Fitness Industry, Registered and Licensed Clubs, Amusement, Events and Recreation, or Gardening and Landscaping Services awards
How pay is structured
MA000082 sets minimum rates through a set of classification levels defined by the skill, experience and responsibility each role demands, with the detailed descriptors set out in the award's classification schedule. You assign each employee to the level that matches the duties they genuinely perform, then pay no less than that level's minimum. Where you employ juniors, the award provides percentage-based rates scaled to age, and casuals are paid by the hour with a loading. Minimum rates are reviewed each year through the Fair Work Commission's Annual Wage Review and lift from the first full pay period on or after 1 July; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums. Because any remembered figure dates quickly, always read the current rate for a classification from the Fair Work Pay Calculator.
Penalties & loadings
Sport runs on weekends and after hours, but under this award ordinary hours run Monday to Sunday between 6am and 6pm with no separate weekend loading, so ordinary weekend hours are paid at the ordinary rate. Premiums apply only to public holidays and overtime: public holiday work is paid at a premium that can reach up to 150%, and overtime applies once an employee works beyond ordinary hours, with rates that step up after the initial period. Casual employees receive a loading on top of the minimum rate, commonly 25%, in lieu of leave and other permanent entitlements. The award also provides for relevant allowances, which can include overtime meal, vehicle, travelling-meal and living-away-from-home allowances, and reimbursement of coaching-staff training-attendance costs. Annual leave loading is 17.5%. Confirm every current penalty, loading and allowance against the Fair Work source before you run pay.

We deliberately don’t republish dollar figures here because they change each 1 July; the Fair Work source is always current.
Where employers get caught
Common Sporting Organisations Award compliance traps
Treating volunteers and employees as interchangeable
Sporting bodies lean heavily on volunteers, but the moment someone is engaged as an employee the award's minimum rates, penalties and entitlements apply in full. Paying an honorarium or a token amount to someone doing genuine employee work does not satisfy the award. Be clear about who is a volunteer and who is staff, and pay employees correctly for every hour.
Misclassifying administration and development roles
Sport administrators, development officers and ground staff must sit at the classification level that reflects their actual responsibilities, not a default or the cheapest band. Underclassifying a coordinator or a senior groundskeeper is a common source of underpayment. Use the award's classification descriptors to place each role accurately.
Misreading weekend and public holiday treatment on game days
Because fixtures and events fall on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, it is easy to assume weekend work attracts a loading. Under this award ordinary weekend hours are paid at the ordinary rate, with premiums only on public holidays and for overtime. The errors that bite are missing the public holiday premium, missing overtime when shifts run long, and missing any casual loading. Map each shift to the correct day and apply the right premium where one is due.
Not reimbursing coaching-staff training costs
The award provides for reimbursement of coaching staff's training-attendance costs, a distinctive entitlement easy to miss in a club that treats such courses as the employee's own expense. Requiring coaching staff to fund required training out of pocket can breach the award. Identify which coaching roles attract the reimbursement and confirm the current entitlement against the Fair Work source.
