Aged and Disability Support jobs in Mount Isa

Aged and Disability Support in Mount Isa involves the same work as it does anywhere in Australia, but who employs you, and under which registration or clearance, is local. Mount Isa's largest employing industries are Mining, Manufacturing and Health Care and Social Assistance, which shapes both where the work is and how steady it tends to be. Licensing is set by Queensland, not nationally — the requirements below are the ones that apply here.

Licensing

Licensing for aged and disability support in QLD

There is no occupational licence or national registration for support workers, but the clearance picture is strict and it differs by state. Anyone working with children needs the child-related clearance issued in their state or territory, and these are separate schemes with different names, terms and portability rules. Anyone delivering NDIS supports in a risk-assessed role must hold an NDIS Worker Screening Check — the rules are national and set by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, but you apply through your own state or territory screening unit and the clearance is then portable nationally for five years. Aged care workers must also meet Commonwealth aged care police certificate and statutory declaration requirements. Most employers additionally require a current first aid certificate and a driver licence.

Queensland
Blue Card (working with children check) issued by Blue Card Services, part of the Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety; Queensland's 'no card, no start' rule means you cannot begin regulated child-related work before the card issues. NDIS supports require a separate NDIS Worker Screening Check through the Queensland Worker Screening Unit — the blue card and the NDIS check are different products and one does not substitute for the other.

Licensing rules change. Confirm with the regulator named above before quoting or contracting — this page is a starting point, not advice.

Who hires in aged and disability support in Mount Isa

Mount Isa is a Glencore town in transition. The underground copper mines closed in the second half of 2025 after about 70 years; the copper smelter now runs on third-party north-west Queensland concentrate under an A$600m State and Commonwealth support package to end-2028, while the George Fisher zinc-lead mine continues.

Glencore Mount Isa Mines (copper smelter, George Fisher zinc-lead mine, lead smelter), North West Hospital and Health Service (Mount Isa Hospital), Mount Isa City Council and Gidgee Healing are among the largest employers in Mount Isa. Most people working in aged and disability support here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.
