Butchers jobs in Roma
Butchers in Roma do the same work as butchers anywhere in Australia, but who employs them, and under which licence, is local. Roma's largest employing industries are Mining, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing and Health Care and Social Assistance, which shapes both where the work is and how steady it tends to be. Licensing is set by Queensland, not nationally — the requirements below are the ones that apply here.

Licensing
Licensing for butchers in QLD
Butchering is not a licensed occupation in any Australian state or territory - there is no personal butcher's licence anywhere. Regulation attaches to the business and the premises, not the tradesperson. Retail butcher shops require a food business licence or registration from the local council or state food regulator, and abattoirs, boning rooms and smallgoods manufacturers face heavier accreditation under state meat safety schemes and, for export, Commonwealth oversight. The state variation is entirely in premises licensing and meat safety accreditation.
- Queensland
- Not a licensed occupation. Retail butchers hold a food business licence from the local government under the Food Act 2006 (Qld); meat processing and wholesaling is accredited by Safe Food Production Queensland. No personal butcher licence exists.
Licensing rules change. Confirm with the regulator named above before quoting or contracting — this page is a starting point, not advice.
Local market
Who hires butchers in Roma
Roma runs on two things: Surat Basin coal seam gas, where Santos GLNG and Australia Pacific LNG base field crews, drilling and maintenance work; and cattle, through the council-run Roma Saleyards, the largest cattle selling centre in Australia, which turns off hundreds of thousands of head a year.
Santos (GLNG Surat Basin operations, Roma), Australia Pacific LNG / Origin Energy (Surat Basin upstream operations), Maranoa Regional Council and South West Hospital and Health Service (Roma Hospital) are among the largest employers in Roma. Most butchers here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.
Largest employing industries
13,370 people (Maranoa (Local Government Area, of which Roma is the principal town and administrative centre), ABS Estimated Resident Population at 30 June 2025. Roma is below the 10,000-person threshold for an ABS Significant Urban Area, so no separate urban-area ERP is published.).
