Butchers jobs in Sydney

Butchers in Sydney do the same work as butchers anywhere in Australia, but who employs them, and under which licence, is local. Sydney's largest employing industries are Health care and social assistance, Professional, scientific and technical services and Retail trade, which shapes both where the work is and how steady it tends to be. Licensing is set by New South Wales, not nationally — the requirements below are the ones that apply here.

Licensing

Licensing for butchers in NSW

Butchering is not a licensed occupation in any Australian state or territory - there is no personal butcher's licence anywhere. Regulation attaches to the business and the premises, not the tradesperson. Retail butcher shops require a food business licence or registration from the local council or state food regulator, and abattoirs, boning rooms and smallgoods manufacturers face heavier accreditation under state meat safety schemes and, for export, Commonwealth oversight. The state variation is entirely in premises licensing and meat safety accreditation.

New South Wales
Not a licensed occupation. Butcher shops and meat processors are licensed by the NSW Food Authority under the Food Act 2003 (NSW) meat safety scheme, and must appoint a Food Safety Supervisor. The individual butcher holds no licence.

Licensing rules change. Confirm with the regulator named above before quoting or contracting — this page is a starting point, not advice.

Local market

Who hires butchers in Sydney

Sydney is Australia's financial centre, with the ASX, the major banks' institutional arms and most global investment banks' Australian operations concentrated in the CBD and Barangaroo. By headcount, however, health care and professional services are the largest employing industries, and international education is a major export sector. Construction hiring has tracked a long pipeline of transport megaprojects including Sydney Metro and WestConnex.

Sydney Local Health District, The University of Sydney, University of New South Wales and Commonwealth Bank of Australia are among the largest employers in Sydney. Most butchers here, though, are hired by small and mid-sized businesses rather than by the names everyone recognises — which is why so many local vacancies never reach a big job board.
