Licensing

Licensing by state

This occupation is not licensed and no state teacher regulatory authority registers workplace trainers. The requirement depends entirely on what you deliver. If you deliver or assess nationally recognised training from training.gov.au on behalf of an RTO, the Standards for Registered Training Organisations apply and you must hold TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or its listed equivalents, or TAE50122 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, to work without direction; someone actively working towards the credential has two years to complete it while supervised. If you deliver purely internal, non-accredited training, there is no legal credential requirement, though TAE40122 remains the market standard. Where training involves learners under 18 — apprentices, trainees, school-based trainees or youth programs — you need the child-related clearance for your own state or territory. Some industry-specific training, such as high risk work licence training, carries its own separate accreditation requirements set by the work health and safety regulator in each state.

the Australian Capital Territory

No ACT Teacher Quality Institute registration applies. Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration from Access Canberra is required, and because the ACT scheme also covers vulnerable adults it captures more workplace training contexts than child-only schemes. High risk work assessors are accredited by WorkSafe ACT.

New South Wales

No accreditation with the NSW Education Standards Authority applies. A Working With Children Check clearance from the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian is required for training learners under 18. High risk work licence assessors must be accredited by SafeWork NSW.

the Northern Territory

No Teacher Registration Board NT registration applies. A Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card) through SAFE NT is required for training learners under 18 and runs two years. High risk work assessors are accredited by NT WorkSafe.

Queensland

No teacher registration applies; the Queensland College of Teachers does not register workplace trainers. A Blue Card from Blue Card Services (Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety) is required where you train learners under 18, such as school-based apprentices, under 'no card, no start'. High risk work licence training assessors must be accredited by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.

South Australia

No Teachers Registration Board of SA registration applies. A Working with Children Check from the DHS Screening Unit is required for training learners under 18, valid five years with continuous monitoring. High risk work assessors are accredited by SafeWork SA.

Tasmania

No Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania registration applies. Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) from CBOS, Department of Justice, is required for training learners under 18. High risk work assessors are accredited by WorkSafe Tasmania.

Victoria

No Victorian Institute of Teaching registration applies. A Working with Children Clearance from Working with Children Check Victoria (Department of Justice and Community Safety) is required for training learners under 18. Victorian-only RTOs are regulated by the VRQA rather than ASQA. High risk work assessors are accredited by WorkSafe Victoria.

Western Australia

No Teacher Registration Board of WA registration applies. A Working with Children (WWC) Check from the Department of Communities is required for training learners under 18. WA-only RTOs are regulated by the Training Accreditation Council, which publishes its own TAE40122 requirements. High risk work assessors are accredited by WorkSafe WA.
