Licensing

Licensing by state

There is no teacher registration for VET. No state teacher regulatory authority — not QCT, NESA, VIT, TRBWA, TRB SA, the Tasmanian board, ACT TQI or TRB NT — registers vocational education teachers. Instead, the requirement sits on the RTO under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations, enforced by ASQA nationally and by the Victorian and Western Australian state regulators for providers registered with them. Under those standards a person must hold TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or its listed equivalents, or TAE50122 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, to deliver and assess without direction; a person actively working towards the credential has two years to complete it while working under the direction of a fully credentialed trainer. Where you teach students under 18 — very common in VET in Schools, school-based apprenticeships and youth programs — you must also hold the child-related clearance issued in your state or territory.

the Australian Capital Territory

No teacher registration applies — ACT TQI registers school teachers, not VET trainers. RTOs are regulated by ASQA. Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration from Access Canberra is required, and the ACT scheme's coverage of vulnerable adults captures more VET delivery than child-only schemes elsewhere.

New South Wales

No teacher registration applies; NESA does not register VET trainers. RTOs are regulated by ASQA. A Working With Children Check clearance from the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian is required for teaching students under 18 and must be verified by the employer.

the Northern Territory

No teacher registration applies. RTOs are regulated by ASQA. A Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card) through SAFE NT is required for teaching students under 18 and runs two years.

Queensland

No teacher registration applies. RTOs are regulated by ASQA. A Blue Card from Blue Card Services (Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety) is required to teach students under 18, including VET in Schools delivery, under 'no card, no start'. Trade teaching may also require an occupational licence for your own trade, such as an electrical or plumbing licence.

South Australia

No teacher registration applies. RTOs are regulated by ASQA. A Working with Children Check from the DHS Screening Unit is required for teaching students under 18 and is valid five years with continuous monitoring.

Tasmania

No teacher registration applies. RTOs are regulated by ASQA. Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) from CBOS, Department of Justice, is required for teaching students under 18.

Victoria

No teacher registration applies — VIT does not register VET trainers. Victorian-registered RTOs are regulated by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) rather than ASQA where they operate only in Victoria. A Working with Children Clearance from Working with Children Check Victoria is required for teaching students under 18.

Western Australia

No teacher registration applies; TRBWA does not register VET trainers. WA-only RTOs are regulated by the Training Accreditation Council (TAC), which publishes its own guidance on TAE40122 requirements. A Working with Children (WWC) Check from the Department of Communities is required for teaching students under 18.
