What the Pest Control Industry Award covers
The Pest Control Industry Award 2020 (MA000097) is the modern award that sets minimum pay and conditions for employers and employees in the pest control industry across Australia. It covers businesses that carry out the control, prevention and eradication of pests - including pest technicians treating homes and commercial premises, termite and timber-pest work, and fumigation - along with associated operational and support roles. Because the work is mobile, often involves on-call call-outs and the use of chemicals, the award includes provisions for travel, allowances and conditions that sit on top of its classification rates.
Who it covers
- Employers throughout Australia in the pest control industry providing pest control, prevention, eradication and fumigation services
- Pest control technicians and operators treating residential, commercial and industrial premises, including termite and timber-pest and fumigation work
- Associated operational, depot and support staff, across full-time, part-time and casual engagement, including mobile and on-call work
- It does not cover general cleaning services, agricultural spraying covered by rural awards, or building and construction work captured by other awards where they apply instead
How pay is structured
MA000097 sets minimum rates through classification levels defined by the skills, licences, qualifications and responsibilities of each role, from entry-level operators up to experienced technicians and supervisory grades. You place each employee at the level matching the work they perform, then pay no less than that minimum, with juniors paid a percentage of the adult rate and trainees on their own scales. Because pest control technicians travel between jobs, the arrangement of ordinary hours, start and finish points and travel time interacts with how pay is calculated. Minimum rates are reviewed every year in the Annual Wage Review and rise from the first full pay period on or after 1 July; the 2026 review added 4.75% to award minimums. Always confirm the current rate for a classification on the Fair Work Pay Calculator rather than relying on a remembered figure.
Penalties & loadings
On top of the minimum rate, MA000097 provides weekend and public holiday penalties, overtime, casual loading and several allowances. Saturday and Sunday ordinary hours attract penalties (as a guide, Saturday loadings are commonly around 25% and Sunday around 50%), and public holiday work is paid at a substantial premium that can reach up to 150%. Casuals receive a loading on top of the minimum rate, commonly 25%. Because the work is mobile and sometimes hazardous, the award carries allowances that can include a vehicle or travel allowance, a meal allowance for qualifying overtime, a first aid allowance, and allowances tied to particular conditions or chemicals used in the work. Annual leave loading is 17.5%. Confirm every current penalty and allowance figure against the Fair Work Pay Calculator before paying.

Where employers get caught
Common Pest Control Industry Award compliance traps
Misclassifying technicians by experience and licensing
A licensed termite or fumigation technician with specialist competencies sits differently from an entry-level operator, and defaulting everyone to the lowest level risks underpaying skilled staff. Use the award's classification definitions to place each technician by their actual duties, licences and responsibilities, and check the current rate for that level on the Fair Work source.
Not paying for travel time and using personal vehicles
Because technicians move between jobs, questions of travel time, start and finish points and use of a vehicle directly affect pay, and a flat day rate can miss travel-related entitlements and the vehicle allowance. Map how ordinary hours and travel are arranged, and pay any applicable vehicle or travel allowance. Confirm the relevant provisions for this award against the Fair Work source.
Missing chemical and condition-based allowances
MA000097 provides allowances tied to particular conditions and the chemicals used in pest work, alongside first aid and meal allowances. Paying technicians only the classification rate for fumigation or chemical-handling work omits these condition-based entitlements, several of which arise per task or occasion. Identify which allowances each job attracts and confirm the current amounts for this award on the Fair Work source.
Overlooking on-call, call-out and overtime on after-hours jobs
Pest control often involves after-hours or emergency call-outs, and rostering a technician to attend outside ordinary hours can trigger overtime, minimum payment periods and any on-call arrangements. Paying only a flat amount for a call-out can understate what is owed. Confirm the overtime, minimum engagement and any call-out provisions for this award via the Fair Work source.
