What the Gardening and Landscaping Services Award covers
The Gardening and Landscaping Services Award 2020 (MA000101) is the modern award that sets minimum pay and conditions for employers and employees who provide gardening and landscaping services across Australia. It covers landscape construction and maintenance, garden and grounds care, lawn mowing and turf work, and related horticultural services carried out for clients. Because so much of the work happens outdoors, on the move between sites and using the employee's own tools or vehicle, the award's travel and tool provisions, including travel between sites and the vehicle or travel allowance, are central to paying it correctly. If you run a gardening or landscaping business with employees who are not award-free, MA000101 generally applies.
Who it covers
- Employers throughout Australia providing gardening and landscaping services, including landscape construction, garden maintenance and grounds care
- Employees engaged in lawn mowing, turf laying, planting, garden and grounds maintenance, and landscape construction work
- Apprentices, trainees, juniors and adult employees across full-time, part-time and casual engagement, including those moving between client sites
- It does not cover work captured by other awards, such as the Building and Construction, Local Government, Cemetery Industry, or Educational Services (Schools) General Staff awards where landscaping or grounds work falls under those instruments
How pay is structured
MA000101 sets minimum rates through a classification structure based on the skills, training and responsibilities of the role, from entry-level gardening and grounds work up to trade-qualified horticulturists and landscape tradespeople and more senior or supervisory bands (the definitions sit in the award's classification schedule). You place each employee at the level that matches the work they actually perform, then pay at least that level's minimum. Adult, junior and apprentice rates apply where relevant, with apprentices progressing through their training years. Full-time employees work an average of 38 ordinary hours a week. Minimum rates are reviewed each year in the Annual Wage Review and rise from the first full pay period on or after 1 July; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums. Always confirm the current rate for a classification on the Fair Work Pay Calculator.
Penalties & loadings
Although much gardening work is weekday daytime, the award still carries weekend and public holiday penalties, overtime and a set of allowances geared to outdoor, mobile work. Saturday and Sunday ordinary hours attract penalties (as a guide, commonly around 25% on Saturday and around 50% on Sunday), public holiday work can reach up to 150%, and overtime is paid at stepped penalty rates. Casuals receive a loading on the minimum rate, commonly 25% as a guide. The allowances that matter most in this industry typically include a vehicle or travel allowance where employees use their own vehicle, a tool allowance where they supply their own tools, plus leading hand, first aid and meal allowances, alongside provisions covering travel time between client sites. Annual leave loading is 17.5%. Confirm every current figure against the Fair Work source before paying.

Where employers get caught
Common Gardening and Landscaping Services Award compliance traps
Not paying vehicle, travel and tool allowances
Gardening and landscaping crews routinely move between client sites and often supply their own tools or vehicle. The award provides vehicle, travel and tool allowances for exactly this, and they are separate from the base rate. Folding travel time and tool use into a flat hourly rate, or ignoring these allowances, is one of the most common errors in the industry.
Misclassifying gardeners, horticulturists and tradespeople
Entry-level grounds staff, qualified horticulturists, landscape tradespeople and supervisors sit at different classification levels according to their skills and responsibilities. Defaulting everyone to the lowest level, or failing to lift an apprentice or qualified tradesperson to the right band, understates pay. Use the classification definitions to place each role correctly.
Mishandling travel time between sites
Crews routinely move between client jobs during the day, and the award has rules around travel between sites, alongside the vehicle and travel allowance for employees who use their own vehicle. Not counting site-to-site travel correctly, or folding it into a flat rate, can breach the award. Check the travel-time and vehicle or travel allowance provisions.
Freezing apprentice and junior rates in place
MA000101 pays juniors a percentage of the adult rate and apprentice horticulturists and landscapers on a scale tied to their training year. Leaving a junior on an old percentage, or failing to step an apprentice up as they progress a training year, quietly underpays. Recalculate at each birthday or training milestone against the current adult base on the Fair Work Pay Calculator.
