What the Air Pilots Award covers
The Air Pilots Award 2020 (MA000046) sets the minimum pay and conditions for pilots and helicopter aircrew across Australia, covering everything from regional airlines and charter operators to flying schools, aerial application and helicopter rescue work. Unlike most awards, it is built primarily around annual salaries by classification rather than a single hourly rate, and it carries detailed flight and duty time limits that sit alongside the usual wage rules. Because the structure is unusual and changes each year, employers should always confirm current figures against the Fair Work source rather than relying on memory.
Who it covers
- Air pilots and helicopter aircrew employed throughout Australia in commercial and general aviation, regional airlines, charter, aerial application and helicopter operations
- Employers running airline, general aviation, flying-training, aerial-application and helicopter businesses, including the pilots and aircrew they engage
- Excludes employees covered by an industry award that already contains pilot classifications, and those under awards such as the Airline Operations - Ground Staff Award or the Ambulance and Patient Transport Industry Award
- Does not cover employees on a relevant enterprise award, a state public sector award, or roles such as ground staff and medical practitioners covered by their own instruments
How pay is structured
This award is salary-led: full-time and part-time pilots are paid an annual salary set by their classification, with part-timers paid pro-rata. Classifications run by role and aircraft category - for example Captain (graded by engine type and aircraft weight), First Officer, Second Officer and Flight Instructor Grades I to III - and separate schedules cover aerial application, helicopter pilots and helicopter aircrew. Casual pilots are instead paid per flying hour (the award expresses this as a fraction of the relevant annual salary) plus the casual loading, with minimum payments for short duties. Minimum rates rise from the first full pay period on or after 1 July each year following the Annual Wage Review; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums. Always confirm the current salary or hourly figure for a classification using the Fair Work Pay Calculator.
Penalties & loadings
Casual employees receive a loading commonly set at 25% in place of paid leave and related entitlements. The award is unusual in that much of its 'penalty' content is delivered through allowances and duty rules rather than standard weekend rates - for example a per-day allowance for being recalled to work on a rostered day off (with a substitute day off), plus a substantial list of allowances: night operations, night vision goggle work, overseas operations, freight loading per tour of duty, licensed aircraft maintenance engineer duties, layover accommodation and meals, hardlying, camping-out, meal, travel and loss-of-licence insurance allowances. Where standard entitlements such as annual leave loading (commonly 17.5% as a guide) or any weekend or public holiday penalties apply, the exact amounts and the dollar value of every allowance must be taken from the Fair Work source, as they change annually and vary by classification.
For the exact current figures — rates, allowances and penalty percentages by classification — use the official source: Air Pilots Award — pay rates, allowances & full conditions on Fair Work. We deliberately don’t republish dollar figures here because they change each 1 July; the Fair Work source is always current.
Where employers get caught
Common Air Pilots Award compliance traps
Treating it like an hourly award
Most of the award is built on annual salaries by classification, not a flat hourly rate, so applying a generic hourly minimum will usually get pay wrong. Confirm the correct annual salary or casual per-hour figure for the specific classification on the Fair Work source.
Misclassifying the pilot or aircrew role
Classifications turn on role and aircraft category - Captain by engine type and weight, First Officer, Second Officer, Flight Instructor grades, plus separate schedules for aerial application, helicopter pilots and aircrew. Picking the wrong schedule or grade flows straight into an incorrect base salary.
Forgetting the many specific allowances
The award carries a long list of allowances - night operations, overseas operations, freight loading, layover, camping-out, loss-of-licence and more - that are easy to overlook in a salary. Check which allowances are triggered by the work and use the current Fair Work figures.
Ignoring flight and duty time limits
Beyond pay, the award sets maximum flying hours, duty periods, minimum rest and days free from duty. Rostering that breaches these limits is a compliance breach even when the pay itself is correct.
