What the Storage Services and Wholesale Award covers
The Storage Services and Wholesale Award 2020 (MA000084) is the modern award that sets minimum pay and conditions for employees in warehousing, storage, distribution and the wholesale trade across Australia. It covers the people who receive, store, pick, pack and dispatch goods, operate forklifts and handling equipment, and run the wholesale supply of products to retailers and other businesses. If you run a warehouse, a distribution centre, a cold store or a wholesale operation and employ storeworkers, forklift drivers, pickers, packers or related staff who are not award-free, this is generally the award that applies.
Who it covers
- Employers throughout Australia in the storage services and wholesale industry, including warehouses, distribution centres, cold stores and wholesale businesses
- Storeworkers and operational staff who receive, store, pick, pack, load and dispatch goods, and operate forklifts and materials-handling equipment
- Full-time, part-time and casual employees across the storeworker and related classifications the award describes
- It does not cover work covered by other awards such as the General Retail Industry, Road Transport and Distribution, Manufacturing and Associated Industries, or Fast Food awards
How pay is structured
MA000084 sets minimum rates through storeworker classification grades that step up with the skills, equipment competencies and responsibilities a role requires, with the detailed descriptors set out in the award's classification schedule. You assign each employee to the grade that matches the work they actually perform, including any forklift or equipment operation, then pay at least that grade's minimum. Where you employ juniors, percentage-based junior rates may apply, and casuals are paid by the hour with a loading. Minimum rates are reviewed each year in the Annual Wage Review and rise from the first full pay period on or after 1 July; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums. Because any remembered figure dates quickly, always read the current rate for a classification from the Fair Work Pay Calculator.
Penalties & loadings
Distribution centres often run extended hours and multiple shifts, so penalties and loadings matter under this award. Shift loadings apply for afternoon and night work and vary with when the shift falls, weekend ordinary hours attract penalties (commonly around 25% for Saturday and around 50% for Sunday as a guide), and public holiday work is paid at a premium that can reach up to 150%. Overtime applies beyond ordinary or rostered hours and steps up after the initial period. Casual loading is commonly 25%. The award also provides relevant allowances, which can include cold-chamber or freezer work allowances and meal allowances. Annual leave loading is 17.5%. Confirm every current penalty, loading and allowance against the Fair Work source before paying.

Where employers get caught
Common Storage Services and Wholesale Award compliance traps
Underclassifying forklift and equipment operators
Storeworker grades step up with the equipment operated and the responsibility held, so a forklift driver or a high-reach operator generally sits above a basic picker or packer. Defaulting everyone to the lowest grade, or failing to recognise an equipment ticket in the classification, underpays skilled operators. Use the award's grade descriptors to place each role at the level its duties warrant.
Paying a flat rate across shift work and overtime
Warehouses frequently run afternoon and night shifts, weekend dispatch and peak-season overtime, each carrying loadings or penalties that can stack. Paying a single flat hourly rate for evening, overnight or weekend work understates what is owed. Map each shift's start time and day and apply the correct shift loading, weekend penalty and any casual loading.
Missing cold-store and special-condition allowances
Work in freezers, cold chambers and other special conditions can attract its own allowance, as can operating particular equipment. These are easy to overlook because they depend on where and how a shift is worked. Identify which allowances apply to each role and shift, and confirm the current amounts against the Fair Work source.
Carrying a fixed dollar junior rate forward
The award sets junior pay as a percentage of the relevant adult grade rate, rising with age, not as a fixed dollar figure. Carrying last year's junior dollar amount forward, or applying the wrong age percentage, underpays younger storeworkers once the adult base moves. Apply the correct percentage to the current adult rate for the employee's age and grade, and confirm it on the Fair Work Pay Calculator.
