What is Annual leave liability?

Payroll & people. A plain-English definition for Australian business owners.

Annual leave liability is the dollar value of accrued but untaken annual leave sitting on a business's balance sheet.

Employees accrue paid leave under the National Employment Standards and any applicable award, and every accrued hour is a real debt the business must eventually fund — paid at the employee's rate when the leave is taken or paid out, not the rate when it accrued, so pay rises quietly inflate the liability. Well-run SMEs monitor leave balances monthly and encourage staff to actually take leave, which manages the liability and the fatigue risk together.

In a connected back office this sits with the People hub, where Valont runs award compliance, hr & ir advisory and employer advice line for Australian SMEs as one team. The full definition set is on the glossary.
