What is Long service leave?
Payroll & people. A plain-English definition for Australian business owners.
Long service leave (LSL) is a state-based entitlement to extended paid leave after a qualifying period of continuous service with one employer.
The qualifying period and accrual rate vary by state (typically 10 years' service for ~2 months' leave, though portable schemes exist in construction and some other industries). LSL accrues as a liability on the balance sheet and is often a significant unrecognised cost for growing SMEs.
In a connected back office this sits with the People hub, where Valont runs award compliance, hr & ir advisory and employer advice line for Australian SMEs as one team. The full definition set is on the glossary.
