What is Fair Work Ombudsman?

Payroll & people. A plain-English definition for Australian business owners.

The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) is the federal agency that enforces workplace laws — investigating complaints, auditing employers, recovering underpayments, and prosecuting serious breaches.

The FWO publishes industry-specific guidance and operates a complaints process accessible to employees. FWO audits are not rare for SMEs and typically focus on payroll records, classification, and Award application.

In a connected back office this sits with the People hub, where Valont runs award compliance, hr & ir advisory and employer advice line for Australian SMEs as one team. The full definition set is on the glossary.
