What is Casual conversion?
Payroll & people. A plain-English definition for Australian business owners.
Casual conversion is the process by which a casual employee becomes a permanent (full-time or part-time) employee.
Under Australian employment law as updated by the Closing Loopholes legislation (2024), casuals employed regularly for at least 12 months have a statutory right to convert in most circumstances. Employers must initiate the conversation; failure to do so creates exposure.
In a connected back office this sits with the People hub, where Valont runs award compliance, hr & ir advisory and employer advice line for Australian SMEs as one team. The full definition set is on the glossary.
