What is WHS (Work Health and Safety)?

Payroll & people. A plain-English definition for Australian business owners.

WHS legislation (harmonised across most states except VIC, which retains OHS, and WA which has its own) imposes a primary duty of care on businesses to ensure the health and safety of workers and others affected by the business's operations.

Compliance includes risk assessments, safe systems of work, training, and incident reporting. Serious breaches can result in significant penalties and, in extreme cases, criminal prosecution.

In a connected back office this sits with the People hub, where Valont runs award compliance, hr & ir advisory and employer advice line for Australian SMEs as one team. The full definition set is on the glossary.
