What the Dredging Industry Award covers
The Dredging Industry Award 2020 (MA000085) is the modern award covering employers and employees in Australia's dredging industry. It applies to dredging work and the operation of dredging vessels, including land reclamation and dredging connected with mining and oil and gas projects. It sets minimum pay rates, allowances, penalties and working-hours rules for the crews who do this work.
Who it covers
- Employers throughout Australia in the dredging industry and their employees in the classifications the award lists
- Dredging work and the operation of dredges, including land reclamation and dredging associated with mining and oil and gas projects
- On-hire (labour-hire) employees and group training trainees placed into the dredging industry
- Excludes employees covered by other maritime awards, such as the Seagoing Industry, Stevedoring, Port Authorities, Marine Towage and offshore oil and gas awards
How pay is structured
Classifications in this award are organised by the operational state of the vessel, with separate structures for a non-propelled dredge, a dredge that is not fully operational and a dredge that is fully operational, and the fully operational structure splits into day worker and shiftworker rates. Within each, named roles run from senior positions such as chief engineer, trailer master and tug master down to deckhands, greasers and crew attendants, each with its own minimum rate. Award minimum rates increase from the first full pay period on or after 1 July each year following the Annual Wage Review; the 2026 review added 4.75% to modern award minimums. Always confirm the current rate for each classification against the Fair Work Pay Calculator before processing pay.
Penalties & loadings
Casual employees are commonly paid a 25% casual loading on the minimum hourly rate in place of paid leave. The award pays a substantial overtime penalty for hours worked outside ordinary hours and an even higher penalty for work on a public holiday, commonly up to 150% loading with a minimum engagement, plus shiftwork loadings for afternoon and night shifts. Full-time and part-time employees generally receive annual leave loading of 17.5%. This award also carries a distinctive set of maritime allowances, including dual certificate, confined areas, hard-lying (shared-cabin), shipkeeping, radar observer's, firefighting and cook allowances, alongside meal, accommodation, victualling and travelling allowances. Confirm every current rate and allowance amount against the Fair Work source.
For the exact current figures — rates, allowances and penalty percentages by classification — use the official source: Dredging Industry Award — pay rates, allowances & full conditions on Fair Work. We deliberately don’t republish dollar figures here because they change each 1 July; the Fair Work source is always current.
Where employers get caught
Common Dredging Industry Award compliance traps
Using the wrong classification structure for the vessel state
Rates differ depending on whether the dredge is non-propelled, not fully operational or fully operational, and the fully operational structure splits day workers from shiftworkers. Applying the wrong structure for the vessel's state pushes the wrong base rate through every penalty and allowance.
Overlooking the maritime allowances
The award includes allowances most payroll systems never see, such as confined areas, hard-lying for shared-cabin accommodation, shipkeeping, dual certificate, radar observer's and firefighting allowances. Each only applies in specific conditions and is easy to miss, creating underpayment risk.
Treating overtime and public holiday work as ordinary time
Hours outside ordinary hours attract a high overtime penalty, and public holiday work attracts an even higher rate with a minimum payment. Casual loading does not apply on top of overtime, so paying flat rates or stacking loadings incorrectly both create errors.
Leaving off the afternoon and night shift loadings
Because dredging often runs continuous rosters, MA000085 pays a loading for shifts commencing in the evening, with an additional loading for afternoon and night shifts under a three-shift system. These loadings are separate from overtime and public holiday penalties. Failing to identify genuine shiftworkers, or paying their ordinary hours flat, misses a loading that applies before any other premium.
